'This is a big storm': Results could be catastrophic

The National Hurricane Center says it's now expected to hit Wilmington and then veer west, taking it south of Charlotte.

To ease the heavy traffic leaving the coast, SC reversed freeways lanes to allow traffic to flow away from the coming storm.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Florence had racked up winds of 130mph and is on a trajectory which suggests its centre is most likely to hit the south coast of North Carolina by Friday.

So far, more than one million people along the coasts of North and SC and southern Virginia have fled.

"It is imperative that everyone follow local evacuation orders", President Trump tweeted Wednesday, along with a satellite video of the mammoth storm swirling through the Atlantic.

It's growth has been aided by the formation of a new eyewall, which tends to increase the size of a hurricane, meaning that its extreme wind field stretches even farther than weaker storms.

More than 5.4 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches on the US East Coast, according to the NWS, and another four million people were under a tropical storm watch.

A storm surge warning was issued from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Duck, North Carolina, and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, including the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers.

While some of the computer forecasting models conflicted, the latest projections more or less showed the storm shifting southward and westward in a way that suddenly put more of SC in danger and imperilled Georgia, too.

It will strike with torrential rains, powerful winds and potentially devastating flooding. Some 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Florence was 435 miles from Wilmington, N.C., moving northwest at 16 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. "This is going to be catastrophic in parts of eastern North Carolina".

"If Florence comes ashore during high tide, it could be similar to [Hurricane] Sandy and push more water inland", he said. More to come on this part of the forecast.

As of September 12, the Atlantic has three named storms (tropical storms with sustained winds of at least 39 mph), as well as two other weather patterns that could soon become well-organized storm systems. But one thing it might actually help is to reduce the overall wind speed, though we're still going to have gusty winds around here which combined with that wet soil could bring down some trees. "People need to stay vigilant Thursday night through the weekend, and I would say into next week".

North Carolina has waived transportation rules to help farmers move crops and livestock ahead of the most severe storm to threaten the US mainland this year.

The coastal surge from Florence could leave the eastern tip of North Carolina under more than 9 foot of water in spots, projections showed.
